Area Comments
Hip and trendy, Islington wears its funky attitude and multicultural, political feel very much on its sleeve.
Islington includes of course Clerkenwell and Finsbury, but in Islington proper the industrial warehouse feel gives way to larger, taller and more elegant Victorian and Georgian houses. These are some of the finest in this area, and many are still whole properties, huge and spacious and utterly desirable for anyone looking in the area. There are some of course which have been converted into flats and maisonettes for the local, wealthy young media workers. All tend to be large, and well fitted out. These large (two, three, four storeys) homes are amongst the most keenly sought in the area. Spilling into the Canonbury and Barnsbury area we find more of these large Georgian town houses, amid quiet and beautiful streets: these are possibly the most protected and genteel places in Islington.
Islington is at least partly about Upper Street, the long thoroughfare that connects it to Highbury and on which the badges of its success and its change are flaunted. This is the centre of one of the most multicultural and accepting, left-leaning, liberal places in London. This has been produced over time by a combination of the former rundown borough fusing both with the literary set and with the cool, arty, media and publishing folk who have moved here in their droves in the last few years.
Around Islington's areas are a huge range of properties. In Clerkenwell and Finsbury the printing works and other industries have left and their warehouses are often used as live/work loft apartments for the media community (which compare with the best in Shoreditch and Hoxton). There are other flats around these areas here, both those built before WWII and new, shiny blocks of flats in the Leather Lane area. Around the Angel too, one of the oldest areas here, are some lovely new developments sitting alongside council areas, surrounding the wonderfully modern new shopping precinct (which also sits by a long-established local market: as with everything in Islington, old, new, funky and trad sit side by side).
Both around Angel, in its Clerkenwell and Finsbury areas as well as in Angel and up Upper Street, Islington is filled with 24-hour life that nevertheless maintains quiet for those living here. There are truly wonderful, hugely varied, restaurants and bars, representing every culture and cuisine, as well as excellent nightclubs. There are few green spaces here, although Highbury is close, and Islington Green lovely; but this is still a quiet place to live and a lively place to live it up - as it has always been.
