Area Comments
Well, it's very fair, to cut a long story short. Mayfair is one of the best addresses in London to have and has been for generations - and time shows no sign of changing that. It's plugged into the heart of London, but sealed off by its exclusivity; Mayfair is a great place to live, if you can afford it.
Respectability pours from every brick of Mayfair - and so it should, being mostly owned by the Grosvenor Estate of the Duke of Westminster or the Crown Estate. On the doorstep of the West End and the theatres, restaurants and bars thereof, it's sandwiched between the two greatest parks of London - Hyde and Regents. Although the area is close to the great resources of the West End and the like, those living here really don't need to worry about using them unless they have a hankering for a play or a film: Mayfair contains the best restaurants, the best wine bars, the best in everything, including houses. There is a certain feel perhaps of the area being too calm, perhaps - it's not highly populated by foot traffic, etc. But this is how the wealthy and establishment folk who generally frequent its gorgeous, wide streets, lined with perfect Georgian houses, like it.
It's the territory of embassies (much like its neighbours Belgravia and Knightsbridge) and strict planning controls; bankers (more so with Jubilee Line services to Canary Wharf bringing the young wealthy here as well) and very wealthy people are its population. The huge brick houses, mansions or small palaces really, provide wonderful serviced flats and apartments here. There are houses in the form of little mews properties in the Shepherds Market area but these are very few in number and instantly snatched up.
Mayfair has the best of everything, and as such, commands the prices to match. To live here is to live high on the hog, in some of the finest flats and - occasionally - houses in Britain.
