For an area that's so close to the city - it's only a few minutes to the West End either by car or tube - Maida Vale feels distinctly different. It's very residential, even though its wide streets lead so directly west, and very quiet outside of the small, but very fine parade of shops at the centre of the area. Maida Vale is very community minded - partly the result of the big mix of people, with relatively wealthy residents old and new rubbing shoulders with those some council residents. It has a left-leaning, liberal feel to it that reminds one of a much more genteel version of Islington. There are few houses in Maida Vale except in mews areas, which are always sought after. Little Venice, just towards Paddington, is a pocket of wonderful calm and charm. The Warwick Avenue area contains some excellent mansion blocks, some on the canal itself. Little Venice is slightly more active than Maida Vale itself, having more pubs and restaurants along its streets catering to the crowd drawn to the canal, but both are beautiful, calm oases in the midst of the din of the city.
