Area Comments
One of the cornerstones of London's Northwest, Alperton could lay claim to being the most ethnically diverse area in the capital. It's also one of the most affordable regions you can find, and a great solution for first time buyers and for anyone for whom the press of the city is too much.
Predominantly, Alperton's properties are from the 1930s, with a good number of the semi-detached, partially stucco/pebbledash properties that typified this period of building; there are of course plenty of council and ex-council properties, and some larger estate-type apartment developments, but in the main it is the 2-up, 3-down semi which dominates. Prices in the area are in the main competitive, although as transport and social facilities improve, so prices are ascending, but not at a pace to put off the first time buyers and bargain hunters.
Geographically Alperton is dominated by its transport links - apart from its tube station, it's framed by the Ealing Road, and cut through by the beautiful and under-used Grand Union Canal. But it's the Ealing road which is the geographical and spiritual spine of the area, and the artery which pumps the lifeblood of the startlingly varied and buzzing multicultural society. Alperton is a centre of the Bangladeshi, Indian and Sri Lankan communities in London, and over the years this has been annealed and combined with Polish, African and Caribbean populations. This gives the area a complex, energetic atmosphere that's second to none. The Divali Parade, which commands the centre of the town during the Autumn, is a high point of the year. Business and education are a priority for the local area, with many small businesses, and a successful conference centre, and at least two good secondary schools right in the centre of the town.
Excellent links into the centre of London and an easy escape to the West, along with extremely competitive and comparatively large properties make Alperton very attractive for the penny-wise, the first time buyer or the family. If you're looking at Wembley, Perivale or Willesden, it makes sense from every angle to look at Alperton too.
