Area Comments
Affluent, cool and sought after, West Hampstead's network of streets, which make their way neatly down the hill towards St John's Wood and which nestles against Kilburn, is a lovely little place for professionals and families who want something a bit different, with great local resources, or who simply are priced out of Hampstead itself.
West Hampstead is a little misleadingly named. As it develops into a strong middle class, cool enclave and its amenities conform to this, the area is more like (as the locals are wont to say when pressed) an alternative Notting Hill. And there is something in this: with its cool cafes and delis, with its mix of cuisines and a blend of the down-at-heel and the upmarket along its long main street, it does have that little touch of relaxed fashionability - at a greatly reduced cost, of course.
The mix of properties is similar as well. There are some excellent, large houses, mostly Victorian terraces in lovely, rich red brick, many two or three bedrooms. Along the main street towards the south there are some larger houses in soft-toned yellow brick which are large and excellent, and often subdivided. Many of these houses in the Cotleigh/Kingsgate area (slightly down the hill towards Kilburn) subdivided into well maintained flats - though there are some ex-council ones here as well. Up the road towards the Finchley end, West Hampstead also features some superb mansion blocks with managed gardens.
The area as a whole is very popular with a blend of young, relatively affluent families and the cool media and other professionals (there's a good sprinkling of musicians here) looking for a kind of opulent Kilburn, a relaxed and happy place with great access into town and enough restaurants, bars and shops along its main drag to keep anyone happy.
