Area Comments
Excellent northwestern suburb and a richly multicultural and convenient area, Stanmore has some truly imposing houses tucked away in its many roads of good homes.
Stanmore is a busy place, and a thriving community. It's got a very good village centre which has a friendly, genuinely villagey feel, where large numbers of shops congregate; these include some excellent boutique style clothing stores. Shopping is further aided by good local supermarkets. If you want more, of course, Harrow is very close by, as are Bushey and Edgware. There are plenty of nearby restaurants catering to all tastes and cuisines (Stanmore is home to some of London's largest Asian and Jewish communities) and good local bars and pubs.
The neighbourhood is generally quiet and unassuming; it's a great place for families as a result of this quiet and the great local schools that surround the area. Living out this far from the centre of town of course doesn't suit some, but those that take the plunge rarely regret it - after all, it's very close to London on the tube and the wide-open spaces and nearby parks of Bentley Priory and Stanmore Common as well as several others, and feels airy and light.
Stanmore is legendary for its private roads, where some of the best properties in the area are found set back from the secluded thoroughfares; imposing, detached small mansions, set in lovely grounds, are seemingly everywhere (yet select) between the green areas of the village environs. The majority of the area's housing is more modest, though mostly still very good. The roads around the Broadway and Cannons Park areas are full of large, impressive Edwardian and midwar houses, as well as some very nice detached houses. All are perfect for the family market that Stanmore is attracting these days, as people push north and west in the search along the transit lines into the city. These are families and professionals hoping to square the circle of space and access - and in Stanmore, with its dense, quaint little village, great roads and connections, and excellent houses, you can just about do it.
