London adults 'benefiting from learning grants'
Londoners have been urged to take advantage of support that is available to them through the Adult Learning Grant (ALG).
According to the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), a quarter of the 29,000 adults that that have been assessed as eligible to receive funding this year have not claimed their entitlement.
The scheme was introduced in September 2007 and Clare Arnold, area director for LSC London West, explained that money can be used to fund any aspect of learning, including the cost of books or childcare.
Jackie Dent, a single mother, used the ALG to fund a nursing course at Stanmore College, in the borough of Harrow.
She explained that it has helped create the opportunity for her to study for a degree, stating: "Without it I might still be working in an office, bored and dissatisfied, instead of moving towards the career I've always wanted but wasn't sure I could afford to pursue."
Last week Mayor Boris Johnson called for greater investment to be made in outer London boroughs such as Harrow and Ealing.
