Area Comments
Suburbs tend to fall into two categories, urban and rural. Finchley is most decidedly urban, and proud of it.
One of the most overtly civilised areas in north London, Finchley has a strong sense of itself and its community. This is an urban village where middle class and affluent mix with the longterm locals around a strong base of local shops and cafes in the centre - it's a place very well provided for in terms of local resources and has a good range of individual local retailers. Though urban itself, there are plenty of parks within a short distance, as well as excellent schools.
Property wise Finchley has some distinct areas catering to different needs and budgets. There are lots of flats here, especially in the East Finchley/Woodside Park area, and there are ex-council properties found in reasonable profusion as the district approaches the wall that is the North Circular, as well as purpose built blocks providing excellent apartments in other areas. Some of these are formed of course in subdivided houses; the dominant architecture is redbrick, whether in the Victorian or Edwardian style. Both terraced housing and detached properties are available, some in the form of truly impressive villas. Houses near the East Finchley area, particularly near the extremely desirable Hampstead Garden Suburb, are the most sought after around here. Overall however there is a very good spread of flats, maisonettes and houses to be found; anyone from families to single professionals can make a home in Finchley if they desire it.
Finchley's thriving urban village plan and its great amenities are perfect for anyone needing to get into town, or out into the north of London.

Swiss Cottage: Cosmopolitan and classy
Finding housing in London can be a challenging experience. While the capital's many boroughs and districts offer a wide variety of choice and all-year-round availability, you might find yourself utterly overwhelmed by what's on offer. Even once you find that potential abode that includes enough rooms and a big enough garden within that price range - which is likely to be fairly hefty in London - you might then struggle to match it to a particular school, bus route or other service necessary to your everyday life.
