Area Comments
Cricklewood has a pleasantly down-at-heel feeling, but the properties here are anything but downmarket. This is a splendid area to live, filled with character, great for access to other areas and the north, and with salubrious but affordable properties to be had.
Between Golders Green to the north and Brondesbury and Willesden to the south, this has long been a slightly rebellious, arty corner of northwest London, and is still a favourite with actors and writers.
Most houses in the area are of a very good size and the area as a whole is excellent for families. There are also some conversions affording pleasant and well-apportioned apartments for the young professionals, couples and young families looking for a serious first-time buy. Predominately filled with good wide streets offering excellent Victorian villas and terraces, there are also some very fine mid-war semis. There's a genteel sense of charm in these streets, with vines overgrowing some of the set-back, two and three storey houses in its more affluent streets, and lending the whole area a very relaxed yet well-heeled air.
Far more genuinely multicultural than areas such as Brondesbury or Hampstead and Maida Vale; this place, like Willesden, has benefited from the price hikes in these areas and the middle class has spilled in over the last decade or so. This affluent society has fused elegantly with the hippy-chic, ethnic longterm locals. This means a huge range of excellent places to eat, from simple diners and cafes to upmarket delis and fine restaurants. As befits an arty, literary place, there are excellent local schools nearby, with some of the best inner city selectives very close.
This is a warm and relaxed, arty enclave, unselfconscious and friendly, and its properties of all kinds are very affordable for the standard of homes on offer.
