Millions pumped into improvement works in Barnet
A number of improvements are set to take place in Barnet, it has been revealed.
Barnet Council recently revealed that a major revamp of Cricklewood Town Centre is taking place. The regeneration project includes enhancing the town centre’s shop fronts and improving pedestrian crossings, as well as providing new street furniture and trees.
Relay pavements will also be replaced with high quality granite paving.
Before the works started, residents and businesses were consulted last year and an exhibition of the plans took place in September.
The council also announced that works are due to begin shortly to widen a section of paving running along Cricklewood Lane to create a public space.
The new paved area will provide extra space for market traders and will include a newly planted row of trees. In addition, the work will include new lighting, seating, cycle stands and community notice board.
Commenting on the plans, Councillor Dean Cohen, cabinet member for Environment, said: “These are testing economic times for all of the country’s high streets and I’m delighted to see further improvements underway, which will continue to make Cricklewood a place in which people want to live, work and shop.
“This funding is a fantastic opportunity to provide a boost to the Cricklewood area.”
New signs will be put in place to mark the town centre, while there will also be a ‘Cricklewood’ rooftop sign overlooking the high street with the name 'Cricklewood' spelled out in one metre high letters.
The majority of the works are expected to be completed this year. The project is part of a collaboration between Barnet, Brent and Camden Councils and the Cricklewood Town Team.
Danny Maher, chair of the Cricklewood Improvement Programme, has also welcomed the planned changes.
He said: "It’s great to see the improvements taking place and I’m looking forward to seeing the positive changes.
“This is only the beginning of a rejuvenated, vibrant, pleasant and welcoming town centre. A big thanks to the GLA and Barnet, Brent and Camden for working with us on our vision for our community.”
