It's fairly redundant and enigmatic to say that a suburb is very liveable (that's what they're designed for) but Muswell Hill is famous for getting that design right first off and running with it.
For a long time Muswell Hill, snug next to Highgate and enjoying some of the best views and physical position in London, was simply a collection of country houses. It wasn't until the mid-19th Century that this began to change and the suburb we know today began to form, as the railway was pushed out to connect it with King's Cross - though as with other North London areas this rail link has since been removed, making the area mainly accessible by bus, and giving it the pleasant, villagey feel it has today. But it didn't really become the place it is now until the early 20th Century; hence its long stands of Edwardian buildings, both houses and shops, that create its current character.
These days Muswell Hill is one of the most fashionable and relaxed in London. It's famous for its long, lovely streets of Edwardian parades along Fortis Green Road and Muswell Hill Broadway. This is a trendy, largely liberal area, popular (like Crouch End and Finchley, its spiritual siblings, only a short distance away) with actors, writers, and media workers, as well as more longterm locals. In its shopping streets are excellent, funky bars (one in a converted church), really excellent local restaurants (many with a kind of faded and intimate charm, which is a staple of these famous North London suburbs as any visitor to here, Crouch End or Golders Green will tell you). There are also excellent local shops and boutiques. The funky-suburb nature of the area is also reflected in its weekly Famers' Market.
The green, wide, leafy roads typical of the well-planned upwardly mobile Edwardian suburbs, the gorgeous position, and truly excellent schools nearby all make Muswell Hill a desirable place to live. There are less conversions perhaps than in nearby Crouch End, with the age group in Muswell Hill being a little older, a little more settled. The houses that are the backbone of its property are mostly beautiful redbrick Edwardian homes, large, with lovely gardens attracting well-heeled families and first timers looking for plenty of space. There are conversions to be found if you look hard enough, as well as some more modern dwellings.
