Area Comments
One of the loveliest and most evocative areas of the Lea Valley, Ponders End is a jewel in Enfield's crown. Its splendid mix of truly urban and extremely rural is typical of this underregarded area which is being affected, as all are, by the explosion of property in the last ten years and the investment and redevelopment of East London.
This is a startlingly pretty, green area filled with historical landmarks. The King George V and William Girling reservoirs sit nearby, providing lovely wetland walks, and the whole Ponders End area sits amongst the rolling greenery of the Lea Valley, which leads up out of London into Essex. Ryans Park is the area of choice for local football teams to get some practise in, and is sometimes used by local schools, of which there are a very good number - faith schools, typical states schools and some selectives are in the catchment. There are a number of other landmarks including Wrights Flour Mill (the oldest building in Enfield) and the Navigation Inn, which in 1899 was built as the Ponders End Pumping Station, regulating the flow between the two - the 'Overflow Channel' walk is one of the loveliest in London. New business developments include the Meridian Business Park, a strong local employer helping to re-energise the area.
Housing in Ponders End is generally a mixture; there are great 1930s houses, mostly semidetached, often built in a generous proportion, with offstreet parking quite common especially in roads around the parks. There are of course other styles around here, with some purpose built blocks as well as a few earlier cottages found.
