Area Comments
Filled with open space, a real city village, Stoke Newington is a richly multicultural, varied area. Bordering Stamford Hill and Dalston amongst others, it's known for a great atmosphere and is in many ways the most fashionable and trendy part of Hackney (itself generally a fashionable place to be).
Though part of Hackney, the area doesn't feel like London at all. It's so well endowed with open space and walks that it might as well be considered country in many respects - although the style of housing and it retains a rugged urban feel as well. But in truth, this might be the most park-intensive borough in the capital.
Stoke Newington's open areas are very much informed (perhaps dictated to might be a better term) by its history as a supplier of water to London, which has been the case since the 1500s. These days, the New River constructed by Hugh Myddleton, still trickles towards the capital and there are lovely walks along it through Green Lanes, towards Haringey and Hertford. The great (now historical) West Reservoir is surrounded by parkland and wetlands, and is a superb asset to the area. Its superb entrance is lorded over by the Castle Climbing Centre, a former pumping station that looks like it's just been teleported in from a Harry Potter novel and is a truly epic landmark. Other green spaces include Clissold Park, in which the lovely Clissold Mansion sits, and Abney Park Cemetery - considered by many to be one of the best planned and most beautiful of the 19th Century cemeteries and (like Clissold Park) a nature reserve. There's also the little green, beautifully planted Common.
There are lots of other reasons that Stoke Newington is popular apart from its amazing amount of green space. First there are the schools, the best in the borough and very popular with parents. Second there are the other resources - great places to eat and drink, and a real emerging café-cool culture. Gentrification hasn't impacted the diverse nature of the area and this is a place of many cultures, cuisines and great local stores. The properties are obviously another reason - there's a huge variety (the area's been a population centre a long time), including wonderful and at times huge Victorian houses, ranging to 4 storeys at times, with excellent loft conversions and flats available as well. There are wonderful properties around Clissold Park and towards Finsbury Park.
Overall, Stoke Newington is a real up and comer, with great houses, gradual gentrification and splendid assets making it one of North London's jewels.
