Area Comments
Archway is famous - naturally enough - as a gateway. It frames North London for anyone coming from the centre of town, provides access to the M1 and the North, and announces itself with a shout of dense housing, roads and a rugged multicultural personality.
Archway has long been in the shadow of richer areas to the North, principally Highgate and Muswell Hill, and this - along with the occasional traffic issues that typify an area so convenient for virtually every other part of Central, North and East London, means that house prices have remained good value in comparison to other regions. What is less well known is that Archway provides some of the best town houses in the northern end of the city, with large 3 and 4 storey town houses found in many of the streets. Many of these remain undivided, given the fact that for a long time during the housing boom of the 90s, the developers left large areas of it virtually untouched. Of course, there are many apartments here also which historically have catered both to the need for the pied a terre for city workers (this remains one of the best, cheapest and most convenient areas for City workers living in the North and the Shires to maintain a second home), both in the large terraces that line many of the wide, quiet streets off the main thoroughfares, and also from larger developments and mansion blocks. Prices remain stable and still extremely competitive with other regions nearby, and picking up a large 3-5 bedroom family home near to the centre of London for vastly less than in comparable areas (Islington, for example) is eminently possible and an opportunity not to be missed.
Living in Archway is relatively affordable, and the area is known for its multi-ethnic nature, meaning that there is a fantastic array of local stores and Asian, Greek and Turkish restaurants aplenty. As investment increases - owing to other areas being prohibitive - the Archway area is undergoing a new vogue for its exciting and varied eateries, as well as local cinemas and gastro pubs. Though perhaps not one of the greener areas of London there are landmarks and greenery to be found very near; it's a very short trip up Highgate Hill to lush parks, to Highgate Cemetery itself, and of course a short way further to Alexandra Palace.
Archway is a fantastic solution to living in the city for couples and those who are looking for the amenities of the City and of areas like Highgate, but without the crush of the city on the one hand, or the crush of the price tag on the other.
