Area Comments
One of the areas on the make for the last few years, Kensal Green (or Rise) on the eastern edge of Brent's control, is perfect for access to the West or into town, and is a busy, very multicultural area that's surrounded by good roads and good houses. It's extremely popular with those looking for a bit of space well within city limits.
Whilst both Rise and Green tend to mean the same area, there are differences. Essentially Chamberlayne Road is the divide. West of this area is the Green; East of it is the Rise. But both share a spirit, resources, and similar property.
Being in the middle of disparate areas like Willesden, Queens Park, Ladbroke Grove and Harlesden must give Kensal the broadest range of facilities around. It's funky, yet residential, media-savvy yet a little brash, and draws on the resources of all around it. This however doesn't mean that there are none here. There's a fantastic café/restaurant/deli (Minkies) which is unmistakable on Chamberlayne Road, and its fusion typifies that of other places here. There are great little restaurants, bars, and gastropubs, such as the tiny Thai restaurant just over the road, and the lovely William IV pub just on the way up towards Harlesden. Loads of local shops deal in all kinds of ethnic goods, and you've got a good supermarket nearby.
Though there's little greenery in Kensal itself, there are lovely areas close. There's Kensal Rise Cemetary, one of the biggest and most beautiful; Queens Park, one of the loveliest in London, lies only five minutes away to the East.
Property here is like many areas quite mixed. There are really good - and getting better - Victorian terraces in the main, in the quiet roads leading off the main drag, offering as whole properties as well as maisonettes. There are good flats here in ex-council blocks as well for first timers. But also there are the beautiful little working cottage terraces stretching town a little towards Paddington, several streets of gorgeous artisans' dwellings that snug off the main Harrow Road, and are among the most startling and pretty, and unexpected places to live in an area that many people regard as one of the most varied, both in lifestyle, feel and property, and up-and-coming in London.
