Area Comments
Sprawling out from Ealing and dissipating into the West, Southall is incredibly bustling, a huge multiethnic and immensely energetic community that erupts from the area around the Uxbridge Road like a volcano of light, colour and culture. This is one of West London's most thriving communities, and housing here is varied, affordable, and becoming more desirable.
As Ealing becomes more and more sought after, so those who want to live in the West, who want the access into town and of course, to areas of Ealing and Uxbridge, but don't want to foot the bill that Ealing proper or some of its more affluent adjuncts command, are looking to areas such as Perivale or to Southall. To say that Southall was lively is slightly misleading - this is lively, yes, but it's also a peaceful, respectful place.
The large Asian community which forms the backbone of Southall (there are also strong Somali communities) provides a genuinely different feel to this large area. It has excellent restaurants, very reasonable shops and great local stores where you can get everything you need.
Right next to Hounslow, close to Ealing and Hanwell, Southall is dominated by the Uxbridge Road, although its geography is also determined by the Grand Union Canal, which provides great walks as well as pleasure boating. Other nearby green spaces include Ealing Common and a good number of parks.
Southall is extremely affordable given that you're really only a hop and a skip from the centre of town, and Ealing is barely (extending the metaphor) a nudge away. The property here is mostly the Victorian terrace, of which there are a good number. These mostly mid-sized properties, many with gardens, are the mainstay here. There are also some conversions of course, but many of the houses remain whole.
One of the truly different places of West London, Southall is very reasonable and home to a vibrant, genuinely multicultural community.
