Ealing Council outlines new local development plans
People seeking flats to rent in Ealing are set to see millions of pounds invested into local improvement schemes over the coming year.
Ealing Council has confirmed a series of improvement and development plans for the area during its annual budget meeting this week, including enhancements to educational standards, transport infrastructure and library facilities.
Around £80 million in extra funding has been allocated for use on improvements to schools following a surge in primary school applications, while efforts are also being made to enhance special needs education.
Hanwell and Perivale libraries will be upgraded at a cost of £1.3 million, while £890,000 will be spent on relocating Southall Library to the Dominion Centre, a more accessible and central location.
Meanwhile, £10 million will be used on resurfacing roads and pavements, while £1.5 million has been assigned for improving road signs, street markings, gullies and kerbs, plus £500,000 for sprucing up the borough's main high streets.
This news coincides with the announcement that council tax in Ealing will be frozen for the fourth consecutive year in 2012, as part of efforts by the local authority to offer more protection to the area's most vulnerable residents.
Council leader Julian Bell said: "More than half our funding comes from the government and we have to save £85 million, but we are continuing to do all we can to protect our most vulnerable residents and frontline services."
He added: "Despite the cuts I'm pleased we've still been able make some new investments."
This comes after around 100 local youngsters were invited to attend the official re-opening of the Westside Youth Centre earlier this week, which has recently undergone a £2 million enhancement that will greatly expand its range of services.
During the event, the attendees were also given a chance to speak with local council representatives about pressing issues affecting them.
