If you're looking for riverside, if you're looking for Chiswick, but you don't want to pay the at times punishing costs that this entails, you need to check out Gunnersbury, which provides all of the above, but without the sting.
Right on the elbow of the river, Gunnersbury - named after its pretty park - is a small, understated place, known for its mix of peace and buzz. After all, living here puts you right next to one of London's least-known parks - as well as a great nature sanctuary (Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve is free to enter), amid quiet streets - but you're also within easy access of the M4 as it ploughs towards the west. Not only this, but you're sheltered from social pressure, even as you're in a few minutes walk of Chiswick itself. Being this close to one of London's most fashionable areas of course means great shopping and great bars, nightlife, and cafe society.
Gunnersbury is slightly more affordable than Chiswick itself, despite sharing its position and access. Its buildings include a large number of municipal and corporate headquarters, ranging from the large BSI building to the beautiful Russian Orthodox Church on Harvard Road.
Housing here is dominated by roads of lovely houses, most in brick, with a few detached houses but many in terraces. There are also excellent council properties that - unusually - are well developed and suit the area nicely.
Guunersbury is a proud, comfortable and friendly little neighbourhood which is very much of itself, despite being ostensibly part of Chiswick. With its own tube and park, snug against the river, this is a lovely and self-contained place to live.
