Area Comments
Distinctly different to Kensington to the point of being...well, not very like it at all - but this needn't, and isn't, a bad thing.
It's quite simply a very diferent place. There are similarities of architecture - tall, white houses and long terraces - but overal West Ken has a more shabby chic than couture chic feel to it. It's very popular with investors looking for rental gold, as well as students, short-stay internationals and young professionals.
North End Road is the main spine of the area, and along this slim spin are spun excellent bars and restaurants, funky cafes and a good spread of shopping. With its mix of shops, from little boutiques off the main streets going down towards Fulham and Earls Court, and its strong local feel, it's much more like its neighbours such as Fulham or Baron's Court, or Earl's Court, than Kensington itself - although it does have something of that spacious, easy air that its namesake is famous for.
Property here is often, perhaps usually, subdivided, as historically this has been an area of rental and tenancy. The huge, white stuccoed houses around here are truly prodigious in size, and there are also huge Victorian mansions around the A4. Many of these are subdivided as well, as flats are the norm in this area. The Talgarth Road (as this section of the A4 is named) also features some stunning apartments in a gothic, airy style perfect for arty types but hard to get). But there are houses and plusher apartments in the streets further away from the main drags, with the North End Road (the area's main spine) worth exploring further - because as one leaves the bustle of the main street behind there are excellent, attractive terraces of houses that represent fabulous living solutions for families and investors alike.
