Earl's Court redevelopment plans approved
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has given its backing to plans for the redevelopment of the Earls Court and West Kensington Opportunity Area.
Under the proposals, a new urban district will be built by developers Capital and Countries, containing more than 7,500 new homes.
The 77-acre site falls across two boroughs - Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham - and will also feature open public spaces.
Around 1,500 of the homes will be affordable and there will also be a number of offices and hotels, as well as education, cultural and community facilities.
The borough of Hammersmith and Fulham approved the plans in September, so this latest green light will bring the beginning of the project a step closer.
property to rent in Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham is already highly sought after, and this new development could give potential tenants even more choice.
Councillor Paul Warrick, from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said: "Redeveloping Earl's Court to provide much needed housing and other uses has been our policy for many years.
"On both sides of the border we hope that the granting of this planning application will make Earl's Court a more desirable place to live with less congestion and more opportunity for work, commerce and leisure."
The Earls Court Exhibition Centre is to be demolished to make way for the new homes on the site. It opened in 1937 and played host to the volleyball events during the London Olympics.
Existing housing in the West Kensington and Gibbs Green areas will also be overhauled as part of the project, as well Seagrave Road car park and the Lillie Bridge railway depot.
The redevelopment is expected to take some 20 years to complete.
