Gardeners prepare for Islington In Bloom
Islington Council is preparing for this year’s “In Bloom” event by teaming up with local gardeners to identify the best greenery available in the area.
The authority is encouraging the top gardeners in the area to enter the competition, with schools, community groups and businesses joining residents in a bid to capture the coveted award and highlight the fantastic horticulture on show in the borough.
The council emphasised that residents have always made a big impact on the appearance of the borough and wants as many people as possible to take part in the project.
There will be prizes for the best children’s planting, best blooming pub or business and the best community garden along with eight other awards. All entrants will receive a free bag of compost, a half-price plant and a £5 gift voucher from Camden Garden Centre.
Awards of up to £100 worth of garden centre vouchers can also be won in every category. For the first time, locals will be able to enter their own gardens or nominate others online or via post. The deadline for entries is May 29th.
Islington Council parks and open spaces manager Andrew Bedford said: “We are encouraging as many community groups and individuals to enter the Islington in Bloom competition as possible. We know that a lot of people will already have started work on their entries but there is still plenty of time to have a go.
“The competition is meant to make the borough a more colourful place by tapping into the skills of the people who live and work here.”
Mr Bedford went on to say that anyone with a window box, balcony or garden that can be seen by pedestrians can enter, while school and community centre gardens not visible on the streets also qualify.
