Letting Agents in Shoreditch London N1
Area Comments
Often placed together with Hoxton in many (most) people's minds, Shoreditch, bounded by Old Street, Brick Lane and Spitalfields is a very old area of London that is (like its northern neighbour Hoxton) wonderfully new all over again.
Centred on the lovely landmark of Shoreditch Church and built along the spine of Shoreditch High Street, the area is very urban, and for a long time was the preserve universally of the very working class. This meant huge warehouses, and little working cottages, and little streets leading off Smithfield Meat Market, to an extent the heart of the area.
Smithfield is still the heart of the area to an extent, but the area around it has become utterly different from the working class, dark, dingy place of the 19th Century. Instead Smithfield's immediate environs are lined with the coolest bars and pubs, brasseries such as Carluccio's amongst others, and some of the best restaurants in the area. Shoreditch's proximity to the centre of town and the cheapness of its housing in the 80s led to it being adopted, like Hoxton, by the artistic, design and web communities in the 1990s, and once these people saw the immense warehouses that make the area the post-industrial wonderland that it is, they didn't look back.
Loft living is the watchword still of Shoreditch, the enormous open plan warehouses apartments, but now those that desire them aren't just the arty, design community, but the wealthy bankers and moneymakers of the City and Docklands. Living here is high-energy, with nightlife, bars, clubs and fine dining a must for its upmarket inhabitants. There is still a lot of the more traditional working class community left, and some of the ex-council properties are regarded as the steals of the areas living space by the wealthy. The Boundary Estate, around Arnold Circus, is especially sought after for this ex-council property.
