Area Comments
Hugely energetic dockside development is pushing Rotherhithe into the 21st Century. It's a powerfully historical location whose property is now becoming seriously desirable.
Along with its opposite neighbour Limehouse (at which the northern end of the Rotherhithe Tunnel is found) the area has been a dock or port since very early times, and was an important dockside from the Elizabethan era. Bombing, and disuse as Britain's naval power waned, saw its downturn. But as riverside dwelling regained popularity in the late 80s and the current property boom began, this has become gradually a boom area again.
Most of Rotherhithe's properties are either 1930s or 1980s flats, but as the regeneration of the area began and the Jubilee line pushed out east, these ceased to be written off and are now actively sought out by the young professionals and city workers targeting competitive prices and river exposures close to the Docklands and City areas. Riverside development is also taking Rotherhithe by storm in its warehouses, where conversions are very desirable indeed. Inland from the river, there are Victorian streets with terraced and cottage style houses still to be found, although many of these, like much of the older housing around here, was destroyed in the War.
As more and more city and Docklands workers come into the flats and plush apartments on Rotherhithe's riverside, some with wonderful views of the river and Canary Wharf, amenities have improved. Like Shad Thames to the East and Limehouse across the water, this has become a place of trendy bars and excellent eating, as well as popular pubs being retrofitted, though many maintain their old-style ways and are still very popular both with traditional residents and newcomers. And if you want more, then the extremely buzzing world of Canary Wharf is just a short hop away.
Despite its very inner London aspect, Rotherhithe is a relaxing and surprisingly tranquil place to be (Salter Road is known for being a bit of an oasis), and feels relatively suburban despite being part of London's industrial past. If you can get one of the lovely apartments - still competitive compared with other areas - or even one of the inland houses, this is a very attractive place to live.
