Area Comments
Bermondsey has two distinct residential identities, and the dividing line is most definitely the Thames.
Of course, the river is the dominant feature of most of the dockside areas in London and Bermondsey more so than most. For generations, the area was the living quarters for those who ran the boats running up and down the Thames, and where those who crewed merchantmen across the globe. But with the decline in Britain's maritime fortunes, the fortunes of Bermondsey also fell, and the state of repair of its many fine Victorian houses fell also.
Those Victorian houses are still there, lining the streets named after many of the Empire's possessions which form the principal residential backbone of Bermondsey. But as the area has regained its prosperity, these streets are also regaining some of their former glory - and now many of the Victorian properties in which most of Bermondsey's longterm residents live are looking upwardly mobile and sit amid tidy streets. These properties are still affordable, perfect for conversion or remodelling, and are mostly two storey houses sitting in small terraces.
But the resurgence of Bermondsey has more to do with the river itself, or more specifically, the conversion of the many riverside warehouses into plush, extremely desirable apartment blocks. The high ceilings of the warehouses, and their extremely good standard of build, has meant that such conversions provide substantial accommodation for the young professionals who - both singly and in couples - are moving in to an area where they can easily get to work in the City, Borough, Tower Bridge or London Bridge areas within minutes. This is of course aided by the Jubilee Line improvements - another advance that the builders of the area's original Victorian terraces never envisaged.
Bermondsey still has a lot of affordable accommodation in the Victorian terraces which are its traditional strength. There are some ex-council apartments as well. But chiefly the movement here is in the riverside apartments, which sell strongly and continue to be a fabulous, and in demand, living solution for the young city workers.
The area is filled with social and leisure attractions; on the riverside this means trendy bars and restaurants along Shad Thames and other riverside streets, whilst further inland there are cheap and colourful local markets where ethnic foods and restaurants are available in plenty.
Bermondsey has been in and out of vogue throughout the history of London - and right now, both in terms of its Victorian terraces and its plush riverside tea-warehouse apartments, it's most definitely in.
