Area Comments
Stepney and Stepney Green are places of stark contrasts and wonderful hunting grounds for bargains and for interesting architecture. Like much of the East End, it's influenced heavily by the river, and these days blends a wealth of history with excellent opportunities for the future as the East End as a whole is rediscovered and noticed again for what it is - a fantastic place to live.
Whilst there are old blocks throughout Stepney, as throughout the East End generally, many of these are being either gentrified or replaced with low-density housing that's kinder on the eye and better for the area. As with other areas, investment and the keen interest of City and Docklands workers either put off by prices in Hoxton or Shoreditch to one side, or Canary Wharf and the Docks on the other, has led to the development of some excellent, lofty new apartment blocks overlooking the Thames. Although Stepney is still more reasonable than its neighbours Bethnal Green or Bow, it may not be for long, because it features some of the best architecture and best positioned houses in the area. True, the high density housing of the postwar era is here, but there are excellent Victorian mansion blocks as well, and Victorian terraces survive still and like all those in the area, are being rapidly gentrified. Stepney Green, to the north, is known particularly for its splendid buildings: areas like Arbour Square and Sidney Square are filled with lovely Victorian and even Georgian houses which nowadays attract the interest of some very choosy new residents.
The area remains, despite its move into the modern era and investment in social infrastructure and property, a true East End locality that thrives on its mix of cultures, old London with its industrial, working class roots showing proudly sitting alongside the swathes of other cultures that make the area exciting and varied. It's populated by great places to hang out, pubs that are centuries old line the river, whilst a wider selection of restaurants and cafes lines its streets. Like much of East London generally, more investment and interest is leading to a generalised push towards great services bolstered by new residents and great transport links to the Stratford area and into the city and Docklands, and the streets and environs of Stepney and Stepney are calm, filled with surprising pockets of green, as well as some of the most interesting and historical houses in London.
