One of the best inner London bets for a still-affordable place to hang your hat, Clapton is socially diverse, urban, and offers a huge mix of properties. This is a place that families can get excellent houses for less money than in almost anywhere as close to the centre of the city.
Both Upper and Lower Clapton are stunningly green and leafy for boroughs of East London that are defiantly urban rather than suburban. The Hackney Downs conservation area, Lea Valley Park and Millsfield Park are in the South, whilst in the north in Upper Clapton, Springfield Park offers lovely walks by the Lea River as well as Clapton Common. This is a fantastically ruralised, yet absolutely inner city, area, and families with kids are spoilt for choice about where to go for walks and days out.
Amazing buildings, churches and synagogues are testament to Clapton's reputation both as an architectural wonderland and a thriving multicultural centre. There are some truly lovely buildings here, and the standard of property is high for an inner London borough.
Most of the property in the area - particularly in Lower Clapton - consists of Victorian terraces, with properties arranged on two and three storeys, many with substantial gardens. The level of accommodation is high for tremendously good prices, one of the many reasons, together with its proximity to the centre of town, that Clapton has become popular - and yet prices are still very competitive. There are also Edwardian properties available in some streets.
The huge wealth of cultures and people in Clapton is indicative of its ongoing popularity with longterm and new residents. Waves of people have brought their culture and cuisines with them and Clapton is filled with excellent local stores and great places to eat almost any kind of food you can name, and the influx of middle class professionals and families has pushed the advance of trendy bars and cafes for the chattering classes.
A wonderful find, Clapton is still very affordable, and is amazingly calm and leafy, a really pleasant and warm place to live right in the heart of London's Hackney.
