Hackney's Olympic legacy to be showcased
Hackney Council is planning to showcase the legacy impact of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the borough at a free interactive exhibition next month.
The Place, the Community and the Future will take place at Hackney House on Shoreditch High Street on September 3rd and 4th and will give visitors an insight into what the Olympic Park and the surrounding areas will look like once all the athletes have left.
It will explore the many benefits that the sporting events have brought to Hackney for local residents and the business community, as well as those looking for property to rent in Clapton, Dalston, Homerton and other parts of the borough.
Hackney is one of five so-called Olympic boroughs, all of which have seen major regeneration taking place in the run-up to the Games, and will continue to do so in the years afterwards.
While Newham has seen the biggest transformation in terms of new buildings, it is Hackney that has benefitted the most from improved transport links, making it an even more attractive place for people to live.
Thanks to the extension of the East London line, the borough now has a connection to the Tube network, allowing residents to get into the centre of the capital and to other suburbs quickly and easily by train.
There will be a number of exhibitors at the council exhibition, all of whom have been involved in the development of the Olympic Park, other 2012 venues or legacy projects in the Olympic fringe.
They will include East London Village, which will be responsible for converting the athletes village into more than 2,000 new homes, charity Legacy List and the London Legacy Development Corporation.
Hackney's mayor Jules Pipe said: "East Londoners can be proud that they have played a big part in making the 2012 Games the best ever but, in the long term, the success of these Games depends on the delivery of a sustainable legacy for the area."
He added: "We are working hard to ensure the promises that were made to bring the Games to London are delivered in a way that has lasting benefit to the residents of Hackney. We want to share our vision and talk to local people about the opportunities and the future of our borough."
He said he hopes that many of Hackney's residents, as well as those from other East London boroughs come along to the exhibition to find out more.
