New conservation areas planned around Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest has announced plans for two new conservation areas near Lloyd Park and Bakers Arms town centre.
The area has a strong reputation for protecting the environment, with 12 conservation areas already established that help to protect and promote the borough’s history and natural scenery.
Conservation areas influence the way councils deal with planning applications and development proposals that may impact the region. In order to develop new properties in these areas, some businesses require planning permission.
Lloyd Park is especially well regarded due to the amount of Warner Housing nearby, and the planned conservation area also incorporates the grade 2 listed William Morris Gallery.
Bakers Arms is situated on the crossroads of Lea Bridge Road, Hoe Street and High Road Leyton, with this area including the grade 2 listed Master Bakers Benevolent Institution Almshouses. These have been in the area since they were erected between 1857 and 1866.
Councillor Clare Coghill, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and High Streets, said, “Both of these areas are very special in their own right and providing the protection conservation area status affords will help us retain and enhance them for future generations.
“The special architectural and historic features in these unique locations give them each a character all of their own.
Ms Coghill went on to say that it’s important the borough goes through an unprecedented level of growth, adding that the council is mindful of their heritage and wants to preserve the appearance of the areas.
Both consultations will be launched on May 15th and will take place for a four week period through to June 15th. The authority will deliver letters to all businesses and homeowners in these areas and will make public drop-in sessions available.
For the Lloyd Park region, the drop-in session will take place in the Acanthus Room of the William Morris Gallery on 3 June between 4pm and 8pm, while the Bakers Arms area will have a consultation at the Hornbeam Centre (458 Hoe Street) on 4 June between 3pm and 7pm.
