Area Comments
The beautiful Wanstead Flats area is one of the last remnants of the gigantic Epping Forest, now only a fraction of its former size. Wanstead, its eponymous town, is lucky to be near such an area of beauty and history - and the town itself is friendly, relaxed and becoming a real favourite with commuters.
Commuters like Wanstead obviously because of its excellent access to town, but their families like it for its amenities and atmosphere. The place is so open and rural you might think you'd gone a lot further out. Wanstead Flats is ancient and famous, and marches on to the gorgeous London Cemetery, taking in Wanstead Park on the way. On the north side is another remnant of the original Epping Forest. There are excellent schools around this area, including six primaries. The town is well provided with good places to eat and drink, and has all the shopping facilities you need locally - with of course, larger stores further out towards Stratford which is only a hop away.
Wanstead has an excellent crop of good houses. Most of these are Victorian - naturally enough since this was when the suburb was mainly developed. There are also Edwardian properties, notably in the Lakehouse area to the south, as well as good apartments in the centre of the town. The best houses are likely to be in the Firs, an estate on the edge of Epping Forest, where homes are always well sought after.
