Area Comments
First time buyers and young families vie with the locals to praise Barking to the skies - and at last, the powers that be both in the property game and government itself are starting to catch up. A massive project to generate 4000 new homes is underway, and the area's regeneration is turning it from a slightly faded inner London borough into a genuinely up-and-comer.
Property ranges from predominant Victorian terraces to the big Edwardian properties around the parks, of which there are several (including Mayesbrook Park, Barking Park). Some of the less desirable developments of the 60s have been pulled down to make way for the regeneration, which is brilliantly timed to make Barking the perfect residential launchpad for East London's Olympic future.
Prices are on the up, but still affordable for an area so connected to Docklands and Canary Wharf. If you don't mind a bit of quaint pebbledash, you can get one of the huge Edwardian or Victorian properties here for less than almost anywhere else within touching distance of the City.
Facilities in the Barking area are also on the up, with the streets safe and clean as the regeneration creates new focus on community. But it's still real East London area, cheerful, friendly, multiethnic, with a world of shopping, cafes and social life that's rich, different and exciting. But with redevelopment and reinvestment, the area feels more forward-facing than it has in decades, with education and employment a priority - for example, the excellent East London University has its main base just north of lovely Mayesbrook Park.
Barking is above all a friendly mix of locals, young professionals and young families looking to get spacious properties for less money than almost anywhere else. The residents - both newcomers and those who've dwelt here for generations - regard the area as the way to escape the grind of the City.
