Right next to Regents Park, incredibly close to the centre of town, to Camden and other localities, Swiss Cottage is a junction area between St John's Wood and various areas of Hampstead, but the area has its own energy, its own character and the properties around here might technically belong to one district or another, but if you ask the locals the chances are they'll say proudly that they live in Swiss Cottage!
The recent regeneration of the centre of Swiss Cottage has taken it out of the slight rut it was in, but most of the great places around here that were, are still here. There are excellent traditional bistros and bars around the cottage itself (the old Cottage Grill restaurant), along with some great new places to eat and drink further up the Finchley Road away from town. Chief amongst the newer areas is the lovely shopping centre with great stores of all kinds, as well as the excellent cinema complex. There's also a good leisure centre and library here, both recently renovated.
Around the main streets of Swiss Cottage - off the junction itself, and off the Finchley Road - are pockets of gorgeous housing. These technically belong to other areas, but all are infected with a sort of jaunty Swiss Cottage air that creates a feel of being in a very different place. Along Swiss Cottage itself are good flats found above shops, and there are great flats and plush apartments in some of the large tower blocks, great ex-council flats. Most of the more affordable flats are in the areas leading off the Cottage that are technically part of West Hampstead. There are superb apartments in the mansion blocks that are technically part of South Hampstead or St John's Wood. The fabulous houses of Primrose Hill are just off to the Northeast of the main road, with gargantuan mansions wreathed in stucco, many subdivided into very beautiful apartments and maisonettes, but some whole houses that are amongst the most desirable properties in London.
Swiss Cottage is a road junction, but along with Marble Arch it might be the most salubrious junction in London.
