Southwark's busy junctions to be made safer
Southwark Council has announced plans to make the borough's streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians by installing special Trixi Mirrors at busy junctions.
The devices have been fitted to traffic lights, giving bus and lorry drivers a clearer view of what's on their near-side and, hopefully, reducing accidents and collisions.
Numerous buses travel through Southwark every day, as the borough is close to Central London and home to many places of work as well as major tourist attractions.
Residents already living in the area will know how busy its major junctions can get, especially during rush hour, and will no doubt welcome the news.
The improvements may also help to make property to rent in Southwark more attractive to potential tenants, especially those who regularly cycle around the city.
Southwark is believed to be the first borough to install concave Trixi Mirrors, using money from Transport for London's Local Implementation Funding Programme.
At the moment four junctions have been kitted out. One is the junction between the A215 Denmark Hill, the A2217 Coldharbour Lane and the B239 Daneville Road in Camberwell.
Mirrors have also been fitted between Ilderton Road and Surrey Canal Road and the junction between the A2208 Rotherhithe Road and Ilderton Road in South Bermondsey, as well as the Croxted Road, Park Hall Road and South Croxted Road junction in West Dulwich.
Councillor Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling, said the aim is to significantly reduce the number of cyclists being killed or seriously injured in the borough.
"Whilst we are extremely keen on promoting cycling the health and safety of cyclists, and all road users, is paramount," he remarked. "These new Trixi Mirrors will make cyclists much more visible to drivers, and we are keen to install more."
Southwark Council hopes to fit mirrors at eight more busy junctions across the borough by March next year.
