A little further on as you stride down Chiswick High Road sits the lovely area of Turnham Green. A great place for access and a friendly neighbourhood, in the heart of a beautiful twist in the river.
Two little green spaces, Chiswick Common and Turnham Green itself with its beautiful, lofty Christ Church, define the area immediately. It's a neighbourhood of quiet little streets, a place for walking and taking the air and for shopping in little stores. There are plenty of these, both in Turnham Green itself and in Chiswick, varying from local stores selling excellent home furnishings and knicknacks, as well as the big names. Along the high road there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants, with Turnham Green itself specialising in more local independents and traders than Chiswick.
The area is very close to the beautiful nub of the riverside that's home to Chiswick House, as well as Duke's Meadow. It's also very near the splendid Gunnersbury Park and of course, just across the river from Kew's loveliness.
The houses in Turnham Green are almost universally lovely and mostly desirable. The keystone properties - Victorian terraced houses of two and three storeys - are absolutely wonderful and sought after. There are very good, large terraces also just a little way away in Parsons Green, as well as fabulous mansion blocks and flats in the Hurlingham area on the river, as well as in Sands End. The most sought after area though is undoubtedly the Strand on the Green, with its mix of Edwardian and Victorian homes of excellent quality.
Turnham Green is a superb alternative to Chiswick or Kew, giving city access without all the fuss, and being a bit more relaxed than Chiswick itself whilst having all its amenities close at hand.
