Area Comments
Chiswick, only a short distance geographically but a world away in spirit from the bustle of Hammersmith to its east, is a well-known favourite for families and the upwardly mobile.
A huge mix of property is up for grabs here in this thriving, well-knit local community. The facilities in Chiswick are great for families, with bookshops, family friendly restaurants, excellent parks and Kew Gardens nearby, and walks along the river. Riverside pubs and water sports are popular here - the pubs on Chiswick's riverbank are legendarily full throughout the Spring and Summer - but the facilities inland, on Chiswick High Road and its environs, are much more varied and just as good.
Locals will say that Chiswick High Road has a Parisian feel, and indeed there is some of that boulevard culture to the place. A wide, well paved high street lined with trees, despite some traffic it feels peaceful and calm, and is lined with cafes and restaurants galore, ranging from the big names to some wonderful little eateries. There's shopping from the large grocery stores to local produce, and excellent boutiques and individual traders.
Property in Chiswick varies hugely. Most of the central block consists of Edwardian and Victorian houses in the streets around Chiswick High Road, but there are also mansion blocks offering spacious apartments. Very substantial properties are available nearer the river, with of course plenty of competition for them. Many of the best properties group around the area's landmarks - Chiswick House and Strand-on-the-Green - and the large Victorian homes near the latter are some of the most desirable around.
Relaxed, slightly genteel but right next to the central parts of town, with the river and the Green always calming the pace down a little, Chiswick is a great place to move.
