Hammersmith and Fulham: a borough set to lead the way in sustainable development
Hammersmith and Fulham Council has outlined plans to make the borough greener, it has been revealed.
The plans include a £40,000 sustainable drainage and greening scheme at Imperial Square and new improvements designed to create a positive impact on the environment.
Imperial Square is currently a residential area, which the council describes as hard landscaped, and neglected. However, the council's new plans would see the area being turned into a meadow that would hold water and drain it away naturally.
Plants and trees would also be planted. According to the council, the exact design of the square is still yet to be decided, and a consultation will be held to enable residents to determine how the area should look.
If the scheme proves successful, it will be used as a model that could determine the look of future 'greening' projects in the borough.
Commenting on the developments, councillor Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler said the scheme is a "win-win" for residents.
She added: "Not only will they get a practical solution to potential flooding but also a new green space, with flowers and plants. We will, of course, be consulting residents on the specifics of the scheme before any work is carried out. This scheme is important as it will help prevent flooding in the local area and also will make the square look much more pleasant and brighter."
The project was given the go-ahead earlier this month, and is part of the council's commitment to introduce sustainable drainage systems - better known as SuDS - widely across the borough.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council also claims the project will improve public spaces, make the area look nicer and greener, and possibly even improve the health and wellbeing of people in the local vicinity.
Earlier this month, the council announced it would introduce green roofs, food-growing patches and flood prevention measures on housing estates in Hammersmith, West Kensington and Fulham.
