Mayor announces new London regeneration funding in Barnet
People occupying flats to rent in Barnet and other parts of London are set to see various improvements made to their local areas as part of major new regeneration plans unveiled by the mayor of London.
Boris Johnson visited the Peel Centre in Hendon this week for a Talk London event in which he outlined plans to spend £177 million on various projects across the capital, with the aim of enhancing local high streets, encouraging growth and creating jobs.
Around £70 million of this total will come from the mayor's regeneration fund and £50 million from his Outer London Fund, with the remainder of the sum coming from additional match funding contributed by other private and public sector partners.
Barnet will be among the 18 boroughs to benefit from the Outer London Funding commitments, which will enable 23 schemes to go ahead that would not otherwise have been viable.
Using its £3.7 million investment, Barnet will enhance the Cricklewood and North Finchley town centres, while other projects include Haringey Council's plans to improve Green Lanes high street, refurbishments for Bromley Town Square worth £5 million and a new town park in Harrow's town centre.
Meanwhile, the eight boroughs that were most seriously affected by last summer's riots will also receive significant investments to help repair damage and safeguard their long-term future.
Barnet Council leader Richard Cornelius welcomed the commitment by the mayor to support Londoners in tough economic times.
Mr Johnson himself added: "2012 is set to be a great year in the capital and I am in no doubt that London will emerge strongly from the economic downturn, but we must keep investing in our many high streets and town centres to address the historic neglect of these areas by others."
This week also saw the mayor calling for Londoners to share their views on efforts to transform the city's riverside areas, via a public consultation that is currently taking place.
