Haringey's investment fund receives over 300 applications
Over 300 groups have made applications for investment under Haringey Council's pioneering One Borough One Future fund.
The closing date for submissions was July 13th and all of the ideas put forward are designed to tackle inequality in the borough. Some £1.5 million has been made available for the programme.
Once it has been completed, more flats to rent in Haringey could be snapped up. In the next few weeks, a specially-assembled panel will study all of the applications and decide which ones deserve funding.
Cabinet member for finance councillor Joe Goldberg noted it is great to see so many organisations taking a keen interest in the development of the location. "With so many people responding to our call for ideas, I'm sure there will be no shortage of exciting projects to help us tackle inequality in Haringey and provide the very best services for local people," he added.
Geoff Mulgan, chief executive of innovations charity Nesta, noted there is no shortage of creative people in Haringey. He went on to note the initiative will hopefully bring together the most pioneering individuals in the borough to improve the area.
Mr Mulgan observed with the right mixture of "luck and hard work", then the £1.5 million investment could be paid back many times over to the council.
Schemes will be shortlisted if they fulfil certain criteria, such as meeting needs that are not currently being met, those that offer value for money, are sustainable and put the needs of residents at the heart of the process.
It comes after another project launched by the local authority was named as runner-up at the LGN Street Design Awards. The DIY streets scheme was a two-year development intended to provide good designs for urban spaces.
The point of the programme was to restrict car use, while encouraging walking, cycling, play and other social activity. Some 1,000 households took part in the initiative, which covered the Langham, Waldeck, Stanmore, Carlingford, Mannock, and Downhills Park Roads.
