Marble Arch: Park views, fine dining and fabulous shopping
Named after the impressive marble structure that stands in the middle of a traffic island at the junction of Park Lane, Edgware Road and Oxford Street, Marble Arch is an affluent area located at the north-eastern corner of Hyde Park in the centre of London.
Choosing property to rent in Marble Arch is an ideal choice for those who want to enjoy all of the benefits of living in the centre of the capital - fine dining, fabulous shopping and plenty of year-round entertainment.
It's also perfectly placed for those who work in Central London, as it's within easy reach of both Whitehall and the financial districts.
History of Marble Arch
The landmark arch that this region is known for was built in 1825 and designed by architect John Nash. It served as a ceremonial entrance to Buckingham Palace and was only used by members of the royal family and the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery.
When the east range of the palace was built in 1850, the arch was dismantled and moved to its current location, serving as an entrance to Hyde Park and housing the royal constables who patrolled the park at the time.
Shopping and eating
Since Marble Arch is situated within close proximity of Mayfair, residents of the area will find a number of top-quality restaurants, bars and shopping options right on their doorsteps
Le Gavroche, for example, was the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded one, two and three Michelin stars. Named after a character from Les Miserables, this restaurant serves modern French cuisine in stylish surroundings. Other fine eateries in the local area include Locanda Locatelli and the Dorchester.
Meanwhile, Oxford Street is just a short walk from Marble Arch and the area is chock-full of high-end boutiques and designer outlets. The area is also home to the UK's largest Marks & Spencer store.
The parks
Those who live near Marble Arch can easily enjoy the vast green spaces of Hyde Park - the largest park in London - as well as neighbouring Kensington Palace Gardens.
These offer the opportunity for plenty of outdoor pursuits, from picnics and leisurely walks to more energetic activities like running, cycling, rollerblading, horse riding and tennis.
There's also the Serpentine, a large waterway that passes through both parks and is open to pedalos and swimming in the summer.
Schools
Marble Arch is right in the middle of the City of Westminster, which operates a number of community primary and secondary schools in the region.
There is also a number of public schools, including Church of England and Roman Catholic institutions. Albermarle is one of the top ten independent schools in London and Connaught House School is known for its outstanding curriculum. Meanwhile, the London School of Business and Finance has a campus here.
Transport
The nearest National Rail station is Paddington, which offers regular services to the west, as well as easy access to Heathrow Airport. Marylebone Station is also within easy reach and offers services toward Birmingham and Warwick.
Marble Arch underground station is located on the Central Line, while other nearby Tube Stations include Bond Street, Hyde Park Corner and Lancaster Gate.
