Merton has 'best food in London'
The London borough of Merton has been named as the place for the best food in the capital, alongside Islington. Top marks were awarded for the food on offer from takeaways, cafes and restaurants throughout the area in the 'Good Food for London' report.
As well as having high quality food on offer, the report gives marks for healthy practices in food establishments. Several businesses were named in the report for changes they have made in an attempt to promote healthy eating in the borough by making the food they offer better in this regard.
The Venus Bra and Brasserie was named for its introduction of salt shakers to reduce customers' salt consumption and for changing its oil to a healthier alternative. Jose's Cafe was also commended for its display of fresh fruit on its counter and for giving the option of smaller portion sizes.
It is not only businesses that are ensuring they are providing healthy food for residents. Primary schools throughout the borough benefit from freshly prepared meals that are cooked on site. This ensures that children get good food on a daily basis and that healthy eating is promoted through practice, as well as lessons.
The council is also continually promoting Fair Trade alternatives to residents through the initiatives, such as the Fair Trade networking group. This group involves all South-West London boroughs and allows people to share different ways that Fair Trade food can be promoted, such as through schools. The council also ensures that any council catering features Fair Trade items.
Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council, said: “It’s great to see our hard work paying off. Encouraging people to choose the healthy diet option is so important for people’s long-term health. We remain committed to supporting good food initiatives and remaining at the top of the league. As well as choosing the healthy option, this is also about promoting ethical trade and environmentally sustainable produce too.”
