New Islington mayor promises fairer borough
The newly appointed mayor of Islington has pledged that the area will become a "fairer" place for all residents under his watchful eye.
It was announced yesterday (May 9th) that Councillor Barry Edwards would be taking the prestigious position. The 65-year-old will be officially sworn in at a special event, due to take place on May 16th.
Mr Edwards succeeds Councillor Jilani Chowdhury, Islington's first ever Bangladeshi Mayor, and intends to apply expertise gained from a number of positions throughout a varied and exciting career.
These positions have included working as a finance assistant for Islington Council which later transformed into a job in the IT department.
With four London marathons under his belt as well as innumerable half-marathons and dozens of 10 kilometer runs, it would also be fair to say that Mr Edwards is a keen runner.
Residents of Islington can be sure he knows what is best for the borough as he has lived there for much of his life and is an exceptionally avid campaigner for fairness and social justice.
After taking up the position of union representative, Mr Edwards notably took part in the London weighting strike of 1974, demanding a decent wage for himself and his fellow London workers.
Families with school-age children can also be reassured the newly-appointed mayor will do what is best for Islington's schools as he has a first-hand view of their needs, holding down positions on the Hungerford School's governing body and Friends of Paradise Park.
Councillor Barry Edwards, mayor of Islington said: "I am honoured to have been nominated by my fellow councillors and am looking forward to being the borough's first citizen.
"During my Mayoralty, I'll be supporting a fairer Islington for all residents and championing the borough, its strengths and diversity."
Councillor Theresa Debono will take up the post of deputy mayor and support Mr Edwards in his campaign to bring fairness to Islington.
