Tenants 'should be gas safe'
Every year, some 50 people in the UK die as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
And according to figures released as part of this year's Carbon Monoxide awareness week, in the last 12 months, 234 people have needed to go to hospital as a result of being stricken with the gas.
In light of this, Britons - whether they live in rented accommodation of their own home - are being advised to look for tell-tale signs of a carbon monoxide leak.
These include sooty stains appearing on the wall, a build up of condensation or a boiler flame which is orange or flickers, rather than a strong, steady, blue blaze.
Lynn Griffiths, president of CO-Awareness and CO-Awareness Week, said: "Having your fuel burning appliances serviced or inspected by the appropriate, registered tradespeople, would also help minimise the risk of CO in your home."
With this in mind, Britons looking for property to rent in Islington or another part of London may wish to ensure their landlord is first able to present them with a gas safety certificate.
They may also wish to remind their accommodation provider than any service of gas appliances should be carried out by a member of the Gas Safe Register.
