Islington names Freepersons of the Borough
The London borough of Islington has announced its final listing for its Freepersons of the Borough award, with three extraordinarily hard-working women taking the top spot.
A steadfast charity worker who has worked tirelessly for the rights of carers within the borough has received the prestigious title, as well as two headteachers who have supported their schools and delivered excellent Ofsted reports.
Jean Wilson OBE became inspired by her struggle to care for disabled daughter Victoria, prompting her to spearhead a 20-year campaign to give people like her a voice within the community.
She is no stranger to recognition for her work, however, having been awarded a Queen's Birthday Honour in 2011 as well as a Woman of the Year accolade back in 2010.
Mary Gibson, headteacher of Yerbury Primary School in Holloway, was also recognised for attaining Outstanding Ofsted ratings continuously since she took on the position 40 years ago. The most recent review described her as "the rock at the heart of the Islington school system".
Truda White, who retired from her position as headteacher at Highbury Grove Secondary School, was recognised for transforming the institute's underperforming Ofsted report to Outstanding during her time there. Despite the school's 1,000-strong pupil register, Ms White is said to have known every child's name.
Between them, the admirable award-winners have clocked up over a century of public service, something that was recognised by councillor Catherine West of Islington Council.
"The Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour the Council can bestow," she said. "I am delighted this year's award recognises three of Islington's most extraordinary women."
"All our remarkable nominees exemplify Islington's values of standing up for residents and fighting for fair treatment for all."
The Freepersons of the Borough award is thought to date back to the Middle Ages and is associated with the archaic privilege of driving sheep over London Bridge. Recepients receive a special framed certificate for their efforts, this year presented by mayor of Islington Jilani Chowdhury.
