Joe Orton book cover exhibition opens in Islington
People living in property to rent in Islington can enjoy a new exhibition from tomorrow (October 13th) celebrating the life of the writer Joe Orton and his partner Kenneth Halliwell.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s Orton and Halliwell were both living in Islington, struggling to earn a living and becoming increasingly unhappy at their local and its "rubbishy books".
As a protest against this lack of "good taste", they began stealing books and modifying their covers with different pictures and new text, often with scandalous results.
The pair were unmasked in 1962 and served six months in prison, an outcome that helped to inspire Orton to become one of Britain's best-known 20th century playwrights.
Entry is free to the gallery of book covers, entitled Malicious Damage: The crimes of Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell, at Islington Museum until January 21st 2012.
Rosemary Doyle, Islington Council's head of library and heritage services, said: "This is a chance for local residents and visitors to find out about this fascinating chapter in Islington's long history."
