Tenants told to check fire alarms
Before going away for the new year - which many rental tenants may be planning to do as they travel to visit friends and families - Britons should check their fire alarms are working.
This is the advice of the Co-operative Insurance, which also noted the importance of testing a carbon monoxide detector to ensure someone is alerted if the home's resident is away and there is a fire or gas leak.
The company went on to note that people can also protect their property over the winter by leaving their central heating running on a low but constant temperature while they are away.
This can help to prevent water in pipes from freezing and causing the vessels to burst.
Furthermore, the insurance provider advised having a boiler service - which tenants could remind their landlords about - and clearing any paths or driveways to prevent accidents.
Britons looking for flats to rent in Islington or another part of London may wish to check with their prospective landlord over what steps the property provider takes to ensure a home is well protected over the winter.
