Islington will remember Mary Wollstonecraft on International Women's Day
Children living in flats to rent in the London borough of Islington will be helping remember women's rights activist Mary Wollstonecraft on International Women's Day.
The 18th century writer and philosopher will have a commemorative plaque installed in her honour at Newington Green Primary School on March 8th.
Wollstonecraft, best known for her book A Vindication of the Rights of Women, published in 1792, died at the age of 38.
Her daughter was Mary Shelley, the accomplished author of literary classic Frankenstein.
Wollstonecraft opened a school for girls in the London borough of Islington when she was alive, in Newington Green. However, none of the building remains today.
Councillor Catherine West, leader of Islington Council, said: "It's thanks to people like Mary Wollstonecraft that society gradually began to change its views on women's rights.
"I'm very pleased that we'll be able to mark her impact on Islington with this lasting memorial and everyone is welcome to come along."
This year, the United Nations' theme for International Women's Day will be the 'Pathway to decent work for women'.
