Islington primed for rental demand
Buzzing north-Central London neighbourhood Islington has proved one of the biggest movers in status over recent years, according to a new London suburb ranking.
Estate Agent Savills released its rankings table again this year, with Islington moving up into the 'prime' division, alongside areas like St Johns Wood and Wimbledon.
Although not quite achieving the super prime status of areas like Chelsea and Kensington, the premium on property in Islington has risen considerably, with the area ranked in the second division (nearly prime) when the rankings started in 1989.
The TimesOnline said that the area still contained a good deal of social housing and areas not yet fetching top prices, but that renting and buying in Islington had been buoyed by the 'proliferation' of trendy cafes and boutiques, to replace older greasy caffs and antique stores.
Islington's appeal for young rental property-seekers may lie in its buzzing high street, with the numerous pubs and bars adding to the array of up-market shops and making it a top day and night-time location.
Yolande Barnes, Savills' director of research responsible for the tables, said: "Most prime locations have an easily identifiable focus – or series of hubs - where you will find a good selection of local shops and amenities and open space."
