Islington history centre launches Charles Dickens exhibition
History buffs occupying flats to rent in Islington are being given a chance to learn more about Charles Dickens through the launch of a new historical exhibition.
A Twist in the Tale: Charles Dickens and Islington will be hosted at the Islington Local History Centre from March 3rd to May 31st 2012, marking the bicentenary year of the author's birth.
The event will highlight the links between Dickens' work and the Islington area, while helping to encourage greater interest in his work and in reading generally.
It will also involve a guided walk that will take in various locations immortalised by Dickens' novels, such as the site of Fagin's den from Oliver Twist or the hostelry where Pickwick met Sam Weller in The Pickwick Papers.
Paul Convery, executive member for culture at Islington Council, said: "This free exhibition opens a window on his world at a time when he was the most well-read author in the land. Dickens' campaigning themes of poverty, inequality and class are still relevant today."
This comes after Islington Council's central library celebrated Jewish Book Week last month, an event which heralded the work of popular Jewish authors such as Linda Grant, Philip Roth and Saul Bellow.
