People's Plaque Scheme returns to Islington
Residents of flats to rent in Islington are being given the chance to have their say on which elements of local history should be commemorated as part of the People's Plaque Scheme.
The initiative is returning to the area for another year and will allow locals to submit nominations for famous people, places and events in Islington that have made a major impact on culture.
A total of 3,000 votes were received last year, with winners including sci-fi author Douglas Adams, Angel Puppet Theatre founder John Wright and suffragette Edith Garrud, as well as events such as the peasants' revolt in Highbury Park.
Nominations are being accepted until the end of January 2012, after which point a shortlist will be created and the final vote held.
Catherine West, leader of Islington Council, said: "During Olympic year it would be exciting if a sporting legend was found, but at the end of the day it's the community who will decide."
A range of Olympic-themed events will be taking place in Islington next year to coincide with the passing of the ceremonial torch through the area on July 26th 2012.
