Olympic Park's sustainability praised
The sustainability of the Olympic Park site has been praised by the UN.
Environment chief Achim Steiner visited the location ahead of the Games - which are due to get underway on July 27th - and was pleased by the regeneration projects that have been put in place. The Stratford-based location has been completely overhauled since it was announced London would be staging the sporting event back in 2005.
It means individuals looking at properties to rent in Stratford post-Olympics will find plenty of services for them to check out. In his statement, Mr Steiner remarked: "I witnessed the thoughtful approach to bringing sustainability issues into the planning and development of a mass scale event."
He added the supply chain for materials was green, the inner city area has been regenerated and a number of energy efficiency measures have been introduced to local housing projects. Sustainability has been placed at the heart of all Olympic-related policy, as the UK government seeks to ensure that these games are the greenest ever.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games head of sustainability David Stubbs noted it was a "constant challenge" to deliver the programme in such a manner, but everyone involved is delighted with the final outcome.
"Achieving the BS 8901 Standard and an 'A rating' for our report are real demonstrations of our commitment and success in delivering sustainability across all the areas that matter to our stakeholders," Mr Stubbs stated.
A campaign was put in place in October 2011 to bring an additional one million walking and cycling journeys to London every day of the Games. Entitled the Active Travel Programme, it has seen over £10 million invested in the city's infrastructure to create 75 km of routes.
They have been integrated into the wider transport network and so will still be available once the Games are over.
