Derelict site transformed into community garden
A previously abandoned location in Edmonton has been reinvented as the site of a community garden.
The Angel Gardens had previously been closed to the public after it fell into disrepair, and became a popular spot for fly-tipping. However, it has been given a new lease of life thanks to the Meridian Water Scheme.
The first stage of the garden’s reinvention has now been completed, and it was opened by local councillor Chris Bond on April 2nd.
Mr Bond, who is Enfield Council’s cabinet member for the environment and community safety, said: “We’ve listened to what residents said they wanted, and provided it for them.
“This space has always had the potential to be a brilliant community asset and its it's great news that we have managed to transform it from a dumping ground for rubbish into a fabulous area for the whole community to enjoy together.
“This new park will help bring residents together, create a stronger community and give people living nearby a leisure facility they can be proud of.”
There are a range of new facilities at the Angel Gardens, which are designed to appeal to a variety of local residents. These include an outdoor gym for local people keen to stay fit and healthy, along with a sensory play area, the first Container Play facility in the UK and a younger children's play area.
There is also a parkour (also known as free-running) course, to encourage fitness among local teenagers and young people. In addition to all these features, the entire community will be able to enjoy the benefits of new landscaping and tree planting.
It is hoped that the redevelopment will bring further jobs and investment to the local community. The next stage of the project will get underway shortly, and will focus on creating a community vegetable patch where locals can collaborate while growing healthy food.
Once completed later this year, the park will also include a footpath and cycleway, more tree planting, a natural play area, a skateboard and BMX area and a space for art projects.
